SEO: A Definition
So, "What is SEO?" Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO) is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing the visibility of a website or web page to users of a web search engine. SEO refers to the improvement of unpaid results (known as “natural” or “organic” results) and excludes direct traffic and the purchase of paid placement.
That's nice, but what does that actually mean?
In short, SEO is an encompassing term that utilises many different techniques in order for websites and pages to rank highly in the results of a search engine, such as Google or Bing, query. Some of these techniques including relevant keywords for the page’s content within the code, observing good coding practices (such as ensuring that each image has relevant “alt” text for accessibility reasons) & updating content regularly which could be something as simple as writing regular blog posts!
Sounds interesting! But how can SEO help me?
Ranking highly in search engine results can drive more traffic to your website, eventually converting into more sales for your business, or more viewers for your blog etc. which I’m sure you’ll agree is fantastic. Obviously there are other ways to drive traffic to you, such as paid-for advertising, but SEO is a great start to organically get those clicks and is ultimately more cost-effective in the long run. And don’t be put off by worrying that your small business will drown amongst the global market – a good digital strategy incorporates local searches bringing more visitors from your immediate area.
So, in conclusion, SEO is very important for a website’s success. Without a good SEO strategy in place, your website runs the risk of fading into obscurity as it tracks lower and lower on search result lists. Keep in mind, however, that SEO may take a while to show results organically but this slow-and-steady start can bring with it huge rewards. Definitely something worth considering!
